    Kölsch

    Kölsch is a variant of the traditional German ales that originated in and around Cologne. Our award-winning version of this complex style introduces inexperienced beer drinkers to the art of craft-brewing while delivering upon the quality and flavor expectations of long-time beer enthusiasts.

    Tasting Notes: Light body, delicate hop aroma and clean refreshing finish.

    India Pale Ale (CASK/DRAFT)

    Our award-winning English-style India Pale Ale (IPA) strikes a beautiful balance between assertive hop bitterness and caramel maltiness. Like its English cousins, this medium bodied IPA is layered with flavors, that invite the drinker to take another sip.

    Hops: Cascade & Willamette

    Tasting Notes: Medium amber color, floral aroma, and balanced finish.

    Spring & Summer

    Hefeweizen

    Weizens are a unique style of ale that originated in Bavaria. The lighter “Hefeweizen” is brewed with light colored malts and wheat. Because they are not filtered, weizens have a full mouthfeel and distinct malt characteristics. We brew this weizen with a traditional Bavarian yeast strain that imparts obvious notes of banana and clove.

    Hops: Sterling

    Tasting Notes: Unfiltered wheat beer, medium to full body, distinct aroma of banana and clove.

    Food Pairings: Smoked fish or meat, heavier spiced foods, and German-style food

    Fall / Winter

    Dunkelweizen

    This classic style of unfiltered wheat ale originated in Germany. The grist contains a large portion of wheat, lending a distinctive wheaty aroma and medium to full body. Our weizen will display a wonderful haze and cloudiness.

    Hops: Cascade & Willamette

    Tasting Notes: Unfiltered wheat beer, medium to full body, distinct aroma of banana and clove.

    Food Pairings: Smoked fish or meat, heavier spiced foods, and German-style food

    1634 Ale – Beets Trail

    An alternative approach to our normal 1634 ale we make this beer with molasses derived from locally grown beets. We would love to hear what you think about this beer.

    1634 Ale

    Originally brewed in 2009, our 1634 Ale was commissioned by Historic Saint Mary’s City to celebrate the 375th anniversary of Maryland’s founding. Lacking any historically documented recipes, our brewers developed the 1634 Ale using malted barley, malted wheat, malted rye, molasses and caraway; ingredients known to be available to brewers in the austere conditions of early Colonial Maryland.

    Hops: German Perle

    Tasting Notes: Aromatic, caraway and rye are obvious with a rich molasses character

    Food Pairings: Pork, roasted vegetables, roasted chicken, stews, salmon and dill

    Nut Brown Ale

    Our Nut Brown Ale exhibits a beautiful nut-like aroma. This russet-colored ale is brewed with a variety of darker malts, lending to a wonderfully composed and complex flavor. Subtle hop bitterness works well to balance the Nut Brown Ale.

    Hops: German Northern Brewer, Glacier and Willamette

    Tasting Notes: Dark red to brown color, roasted nut aroma and balanced finish

    Food Pairings: Game, well-seasoned beef, as a contrast to spicy dishes, and desserts

    Oatmeal Stout (CASK/DRAFT)

    This dark, stout beer is brewed with oats that impart a luxurious and wonderfully rich mouthfeel. Dark malts provide a rich aroma that eases you into your first sip. The roasty and malty characteristics of our Oatmeal Stout are distinct; however, a judicious use of bittering hops keeps the intrinsic malt sweetness from becoming cloying on the palate.

    Hops: German Perle, Glacier and Willamette

    Tasting Notes: Full body, rich aroma and flavors of roast

    Food Pairings: Beef dishes, strong flavored seafood, caramelized foods and desserts

    Scotch Ale 2019

    Scotch Ale is distinguished from other beers by its very rich malt character, residual sweetness, delicate bouquet and flavor intensity. The use of highly-kilned grain contributes to the Scotch Ale’s malty character and darker color. The yeast strain used for Scotch Ale acts less aggressively during fermentation and accentuates its malty flavor.

    Hops: Czech Saaz

    Tasting Notes: Very malty style with subtle hop flavor and residual sweetness in finish.

    Food Pairings: Roasted meats and caramelized seafoods

    The centuries old Scottish tradition of brewing hearty and malt-forward beer is explored in this beer. The rich malt character is balanced, ever so slightly, by a subtle hop flavor and the residual sweetness of our Scotch Ale allows the experience to linger into the next sip.

    Blackfrost Barleywine 2019

    Complex beer that develops as the beer decants. Malt profile is balanced nicely by hops. Full bodied

    This style originated in England. It is called barleywine because it is made from barley (as with most all beer) and is of a similar alcoholic strength as wine. It also needs to age like wine because the alcohol content is so high; through time the alcohol flavor will blend in with the beer. This barleywine was brewed using a unique process called “sour mashing”.

    Czech Mate Pilsner

    A pale lager, the Czech Mate Pilsner has a crisp and assertive hop character. With a light body and a notable Czech Saaz hop aroma, this beer is a wonderfully refreshing option for spring and summer drinking.

    Hops: Czech Saaz & Sterling

    Tasting Notes: Light bodied and light colored lager with a hoppy aroma and refreshing finish.
